IOA's Center for Elders and Youth in the Arts (CEYA) provides specialized visual and performing arts programming tailored to the Bay Area older adult population. Many projects are done in collaboration with youth and youth organizations. Since 1996 thousands of elders and hundreds of youth have benefited from our program. Annual CEYA events and exhibitions have brought the resulting work to the greater community, reaching over 4000 viewers per year.
In 2009, CEYA launched a Corporate Art Lending program to share CEYA art with the community and as a way for organizations to support CEYA programs. Learn more

Bringing Seniors and Youth Together
Creative collboration between elders and youth provide learning opportunities and inspiration for both groups. CEYA brings youth into its art programs by creating cross-generational art projects involving class groups from San Francisco Bay Area middle and high schools. Individual youth seeking internships, Community Service Learning credits or volunteer hours are also encouraged to apply. To incorporate college and university classes, CEYA frequently develops programs in a variety of disciplines, including any art media, creative writing or poetry, gerontology or design.
It meant so much to the elders to share their life stories with their young friends and to have those stories read and appreciated publicly. The CEYA program is a cherished part of our school’s educational offerings, and creates such positive experiences and growth for my students. At this point, I can’t imagine our school without CEYA.— Leslie Keir, Educator, Creative Arts Charter School

The Artworks program, the predecessor to CEYA, was established in 1978 with funding from the San Francisco Commission on Aging and the California Arts Council. It’s original mission was to pair professional artists with frail older adults in senior centers to help them develop and use their creative potential and provide additional opportunities for socialization. Since that time Artworks has worked with over 15,000 well, frail and disabled group-site and homebound elderly on in-depth projects in the visual and performing arts through it’s Artist-In-Residence program. Artworks developed techniques and processes for working with older adults with a range of disabilities and potentials.
In 1995 Jeff Chapline concluded his design concept for intergenerational programming and recieved seed money from the Walter and Elise Haas fund to initiate Phase I of the Consortium for Elders and Youth in the Arts - now Center for Elders and Youth in the arts, or CEYA. The goal was to promote crossgenerational relationships in San Francisco and to further our already innovative community programming.
CEYA is funded in part by a grant from the Bernard Osher Jewish Philanthropies Foundation for the Jewish Community Federation Endowment Fund.
